ড. মুহাম্মদ নজরুল ইসলাম চট্রগ্রাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে রসায়ন বিষয়ে অনার্স ও জৈব রসায়ন বিষয়ে মাস্টার্শ পড়াশুনা শেষ করে তুরষ্ক সরকারের বৃত্তি নিয়ে ইস্তানবুলের ইলদিজ টেকনিক্যাল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে (Yildiz Technical University) উচ্চশিক্ষায় যান। ডক্টরেট ডিগ্রী চলাকালীন তিনি তুরস্কের বোয়াজিজি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে (Boğaziçi University) উচ্চশিক্ষায় এবং ফিনল্যান্ডের হেলসিংকি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে (University of Helsinki) পলিমার রসায়নে গবেষণায় যুক্ত ছিলেন । তারপর SÖZAL KİMYA তে বৈজ্ঞানিক হিসাবে কাজ করেন। বর্তমানে তিনি আমেরিকার আরকানসাস বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে (University of Arkansas) কর্মরত।
বিজ্ঞানী ডট অর্গে তিনি ২৬ মার্চ ২০২৩ এ একটি সাক্ষাৎকার দেন এবং সাক্ষাতকারটি গ্রহণ করে সম্পাদক ড. মশিউর রহমান। সাক্ষাৎকারের চুম্বক অংশগুলি হল:
- পিএইচডি বিষয়ে কোন ল্যাবে আগ্রহ প্রকাশ করার জন্য Motivational Letter লিখতে হয়, যেখানে আগ্রহী কেন তা বিস্তারিত লিখতে হয়। এইখানে সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ হল নিজের গবেষনার কাজের সাথে সেই ল্যাবের কাজের সাথে সম্পর্ক বের করা যা অনেক সময় চ্যালেঞ্জিং।
- তিনি বর্তমানে পরিবেশ বান্ধব পলিমার তৈরীর চেষ্টা করছেন যা ব্যবহার করার পরে তা পরিবেশেই মিশে যাবে এবং অন্যান প্লাস্টিক যেভাবে পরিবেশের জন্য হুমকি হয়ে দাড়াচ্ছে তার একটি বিকল্প হতে পারে।
- নবীন বিজ্ঞানীদের তার অভিজ্ঞতা থেকে কিছু পরামর্শ দেন:
- (১) গবেষনা কাজ ছাত্রবস্থায় শুরু করার প্রয়োজন। এর ফলে দক্ষতা আগে থেকেই তৈরী হবে।
- (২) গবেষকদের যেহেতু প্রধান মাধ্যম ইংরেজী তাই ইংরেজীতে দক্ষতা থাকা খুব জরুরী এবং GRE কিংবা IELTSপরীক্ষাগুলি আগেই দেয়া উচিত।
- (৩) যারা বিদেশে উচ্চশিক্ষায় যেতে আগ্রহী তাদের বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ছাত্রাবস্থায় শুরু করা উচিত।
- (৪) অনার্সে থাকা অবস্থাতেই গবেষনার জন্য প্রয়োজনী স্কিলসেট (গবেষনার কৌশল, ডাটা এনালাইসিস, বৈজ্ঞানিক যন্ত্র ব্যবহার ইত্যাদি) অর্জন করা উচিত।

Dr. Muhammad Nazrul Islam, currently affiliated with the University of Arkansas, has an impressive academic journey and a passion for scientific discovery. After earning his Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and Master’s degree in Organic Chemistry from Chittagong University, he was awarded a scholarship by the Turkish government to further his studies at Yildiz Technical University in Istanbul.
During his doctoral studies, he actively participated in research concerning higher education at Boğaziçi University in Turkey and polymer chemistry at the University of Helsinki in Finland. Following his studies, he made significant contributions to the field while working as a scientist at SÖZAL KİMYA.
On March 26, 2023, Dr. Islam graciously shared his insights and experiences in an interview with our editor, Dr. Mashiur Rahman, at biggani.org . The central themes of the interview included:
The importance of a well-articulated motivational letter when expressing interest in a PhD lab. This letter should elaborate on why you are specifically interested in that lab’s work and how it aligns with your own research. A crucial aspect of this process is relating your work to the lab’s research, which can sometimes be a challenging task.
Dr. Islam is currently engaged in the development of eco-friendly polymers which, after use, are biodegradable and could potentially replace harmful plastics, thereby reducing their environmental impact.
In the interview, Dr. Islam offers invaluable advice to aspiring scientists, which includes starting research work at the student level to build skills early, improving English proficiency since it is the primary language of researchers, and considering international higher education opportunities early on during one’s academic journey. He also emphasized acquiring the necessary research skillset during undergraduate studies, including research techniques, data analysis, and usage of scientific instruments.
