উত্তর: আমার গবেষণাজীবনের অন্যতম স্মরণীয় অভিজ্ঞতা হলো কৃষকদের সঙ্গে সরাসরি মাঠপর্যায়ে কাজ করার এবং তাঁদের অভিজ্ঞতা শোনার সুযোগ পাওয়া। কৃষি সম্প্রসারণ বিষয়ে গবেষণা করতে গিয়ে আমি উপলব্ধি করেছি, কাগজে-কলমে যে সমস্যাগুলো সহজ বলে মনে হয়, বাস্তব কৃষি পরিস্থিতিতে সেগুলো অনেক বেশি জটিল হতে পারে।

উত্তর: আমার বিশ্বাস, একজন ভালো বিজ্ঞানীর জন্য শুধু কারিগরি জ্ঞান যথেষ্ট নয়। কৌতূহল, সততা, ধৈর্য, সমালোচনামূলক চিন্তাশক্তি এবং নিয়মিত শেখার মানসিকতা অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। একই সঙ্গে একজন বিজ্ঞানীর বিনয়ী ও মুক্তমনা থাকা প্রয়োজন।
কোনো ব্যক্তি সবকিছু জানতে পারেন না। বিজ্ঞান এগিয়ে যায় তখনই, যখন গবেষকেরা অন্যদের কাছ থেকে শিখতে, সমালোচনা গ্রহণ করতে, প্রয়োজন অনুযায়ী নিজেদের ধারণা সংশোধন করতে এবং সম্মিলিতভাবে কাজ করতে প্রস্তুত থাকেন।

উত্তর: যারা বিজ্ঞান ও গবেষণায় কাজ করতে চায়, তাদের বলব—কৌতূহলী থাকুন, নিয়মিত শিখুন এবং কঠিন প্রশ্ন করতে ভয় পাবেন না। শুরুতেই সব প্রশ্নের উত্তর জানা প্রয়োজন নেই।
প্রথমে নিজের বিষয়ভিত্তিক শক্ত ভিত্তি তৈরি করতে হবে। বৈজ্ঞানিক সাহিত্য কীভাবে সমালোচনামূলকভাবে পড়তে হয়, গবেষণা ও তথ্য বিশ্লেষণের দক্ষতা কীভাবে গড়ে তুলতে হয়—এসব বিষয়ে মনোযোগ দিতে হবে। অভিজ্ঞ গবেষকদের কাছ থেকে দিকনির্দেশনা নেওয়াও গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

Dr. Md. Didarul Amin is a researcher and agricultural professional working in the field of agricultural extension, seed systems and seed security in Bangladesh. He is currently serving as Senior Assistant Director (Seed) at the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC), Ministry of Agriculture. He joined BADC as an Assistant Director in 2007 and has been serving as Senior Assistant Director since 2016.
He completed his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Honours) and Master of Science in Agricultural Extension Education from Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. He later completed his PhD from the Department of Agricultural Extension Education at the same university. His doctoral research focused on “Present Status and Challenges of Rice Seed Security at Farm Level in Bangladesh.”
His research interests include agricultural extension, seed systems, seed security and sustainable agricultural development. He has conducted adaptive trials involving various local and exotic inbred and hybrid rice varieties and has worked on issues related to rice seed supply in Bangladesh. He has also completed a Post Graduate Certificate Course on Seed Technology at Bangladesh Agricultural University and has participated in various training programs related to hybrid and inbred rice technologies.
Before joining BADC, he worked as a Project Coordinator at Subolomby Unnayan Shongstha (SUS).

Question: What are the main areas of your research, and what motivated you to work in these fields?
Answer: My research mainly focuses on agricultural extension, seed systems, seed security, and sustainable agricultural development in Bangladesh. I am particularly interested in understanding how farmers access, select, use, save, and exchange seeds, and how these practices influence their ability to maintain reliable access to quality seed.
Agriculture is closely connected with food security, rural livelihoods, and the overall economy of Bangladesh. My research seeks to contribute to society by identifying the challenges farmers face in accessing quality seeds, agricultural knowledge, technologies, and extension services. A reliable seed system can help farmers obtain suitable and quality seeds at the right time, which is an important foundation for productive and resilient agriculture.
In the future, I hope my research will contribute to policies and programs that are more responsive to farmers’ needs, particularly those of smallholder farmers. I am also interested in using digital technologies and emerging tools such as artificial intelligence to improve agricultural knowledge delivery and extension services.
Ultimately, the goal is to help create an agricultural system where farmers have better access to reliable information, quality seeds, appropriate technologies, and timely support—enabling them to make informed decisions, cope with changing conditions, and build more sustainable livelihoods.
Question: What has been one of the most memorable experiences in your research and professional journey?
Answer: One of the most memorable aspects of my research journey has been the opportunity to work closely with farmers and listen to their experiences directly in the field. As a researcher in agricultural extension, I have learned that many challenges that appear simple on paper can be much more complex in real farming situations.
These experiences have strengthened my belief that agricultural research should not remain confined to academic publications. Research becomes more meaningful when its findings can be translated into practical solutions, better policies, and tangible benefits for farmers.
Question: What qualities do you believe are most important for a good scientist?
Answer: I believe a good scientist needs more than technical knowledge. The most important qualities are curiosity, honesty, patience, critical thinking, and a willingness to keep learning. Finally, a scientist should remain humble and open-minded.
No individual can know everything, and science advances when researchers are willing to learn from others, accept criticism, revise their ideas, and work collaboratively.
For young researchers, my advice would be simple: ask good questions, follow evidence honestly, keep learning, and always remember the people and problems that your research is ultimately meant to serve.
Question: What advice would you give to young students who aspire to pursue science and research?
Answer: To young students who aspire to work in science and research, I would say: stay curious, keep learning, and never be afraid of difficult questions. You do not need to have all the answers at the beginning.
Start by developing a strong foundation in your field, learn to read scientific literature critically, develop your research and data-analysis skills, and seek guidance from experienced researchers.
Most importantly, learn to accept that failure and unexpected results are natural parts of scientific discovery. Be patient with your journey. Build your skills step by step, collaborate with others, remain open to new ideas and technologies, and always maintain scientific integrity.
