1. Please tell us about yourself, your education and carrier.
I am working as an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and Systems Management, and in the Department of Scientific and Engineering Simulation, Nagoya Institute of Technology, Nagoya, Japan. I got BSc. in Civil Engineering degree from BUET in 1997. I completed my Masters in 2001 and Doctor of Engineering in 2004 from Nagoya Institute of Technology, Nagoya, Japan.
2. What is your key expertize areas.
Geotechnical and Earthquake Engineering. I am working on almost all fields of geotechnical engineering, such as Tunnel excavation problems, Constitutive model of soils, Bearing capacity of shallow and deep foundations, Liquefaction and Ground improvement problems, Slope stability problems, Retaining wall problems, Soil-water interaction problems, Soil-structure interaction problems, and Dynamic (Earthquake) problems.
3. What trend do you foresee in your research areas?
With the increase of density of population in urban area underground space is becoming an important factor to fulfill the demands of mass people in several ways. For the development of urban areas subway, underground shopping center, pedestrian passage, sewerage system, electric cable, telecommunication cable, gas ducts, underground parking area, and several types of underground structures are constructed by means of tunneling. However, tunnel excavations inevitably cause ground deformations and may affect existing structures near the tunnel. It is obliged to judge the extent of surface movement or lost ground that would be considered tolerable to insure that excessive ground movements do not damage structures adjacent to tunnel construction. Therefore, it is required to provide reliable forecasts of the inevitable settlement associated with the tunnel excavation. Open cut excavation to build foundation and basement area of super structures or to construct underground structures such as subway especially subway station, sewerage system, electric cable, gas ducts, underground parking area, etc. is adopted all over the world. In urban area an open cut excavation may cause problem to the stability of retaining wall and surrounding ground due to obvious ground deformation associated with excavation process. I have developed a finite element software which can predict ground displacement, effects of tunneling and open cut excavation on adjacent structures and so on. The range of influence area for the interaction effect between existing structure and excavation should properly be incorporated in a design of braced excavation which can easily be obtained from my numerical software.
4. What are the current research projects you are working on?
Currently, I am developing finite element software to simulate the effects of dynamic loading, mainly from earthquake, on the structures (buildings, life lines and so on). I am also formulating a realistic constitutive model of soils considering time effect which is very important in delayed consolidation of the ground causing differential settlement of any structures for any external load. I am trying to find out a proper and economical solution of river bank protection, which a big issue in Bangladesh, based on numerical studies using unsaturated soil modeling.
5. What did you investigate in your last publication?
In my last publication, I showed the effects of excavations (tunnel excavation and open-cut excavation) on the structures in the vicinity of the excavation sites. I concluded the results based on both laboratory experiments and numerical simulations.
6. Were you inspired by a famous scientist or engineer?
7. Your recommendation(s) and advice for young researchers who would want to pursue research in your research areas?
Researchers should know the fundamentals of soil mechanics and constitutive model of soils, as these are the basic things to pursue any research on geotechnical and earthquake engineering. Knowledge of finite element method or boundary value problem will also be helpful in research works.
8. Is it okay to publish your contact email address with your interview. Our readers may contact with you.
